COACHING FOR CHOICE AND CHANGE
Like every thinker, every session is unique
How do we prepare for a Think It Through session?
Depending on the context of our first meeting and your own interests, I will send you by email a set of sheets that will focus on your goals, motivations, values, work interests and experiences. Their purpose is to clarify and stimulate your thinking in advance of meeting.
What happens on the day?
The session begins with the question: 'What do you want to think about?' This gives you the opportunity to think about your career, life choices, major changes, decision-making - whatever it is you bring to the session - and encourages you to focus clearly on whatever is most significant for you and freshest in your mind on the day.
This part is often very rich and productive. When your thoughts reach a conclusion I will invite you to name an objective or further goal and the session will then go on to help you to achieve it. This is a robust process and may include a series of questions about the assumptions that are blocking you.
This level of incisive questioning can be dynamic, generating immediate solutions and plans which you will want to write down as your specific action plan.
What happens next?
We consider the context, goals and dates of possible further sessions. These can include skills identification and CV building, information seeking about specific subjects (eg retirement/ voluntary work/ trusteeships; job sectors/ qualifications/ training) and other key requirements. This is highly personalised.

Linda Aspey, Aspey Associates, www.aspey.com:
"Ruth combines an amazing ability to listen with her experience of career management - a rare combination that really helps people to think with clarity about their own career choices.
Her skill, warmth and authenticity in thinking sessions always result in new insights, new ideas and renewed energy for the thinker."

KEY MOMENTS OF CHANGE
We live at a time of rapid change, surrounded by new technologies, 'white noise' and constant demands on our time and attention. However useful some of it can be, it means we have never had less time to think clearly and independently.
This speed of communication plus a desire to appear decisive combine to prevent us from giving careful consideration to both our problems and our possibilities. Given that the quality of everything we decide depends on the quality of the thinking we do first, why don't we give it priority? Because that is what is going to bring us solutions. And ultimately save us time.
INVESTING TIME TO SAVE TIME
So at these key moments, whether the choice is about taking a new job, appointing a new director or deciding on a relocation; whether the change is going to be promotion, retirement or returning to work, choosing to dedicate specific time to thinking through every aspect in an independent, generative space may make an enormous difference to the outcome.
Andy Broadhurst, independent decorator: "It definitely has worked for me. My life has moved on massively in the last year, that’s come down to me thinking about things in a different way. It’s had a profound effect. I’ve made decisions that I definitely would not have made before. I left a job that I should have left months before. It has definitely changed my thought patterns, helped me to look at my life in a more realistic way. It’s given me more clarity of thought."THINKING THROUGH LEADERSHIP
As a leader in any organisation from an SME to a large corporate it is not always possible to discuss openly your thoughts and plans - and doubts - with colleagues. It is not always safe to do so. And even if you do, you may not be usefully challenged. Using these sessions to interrogate your deepest thoughts, to test your ideas and to challenge your own assumptions safely and with real clarity will be a vital asset to your leadership, your decision-making, your life.
S. Wallace, Investment Analyst: "I have been through standard coaching but I found the coach to have little real insight and to be quite structured in how they "dealt" with me. The time-to-think session was much more self propelled and ensured I didn’t instinctively place a barrier to an opportunity that might be more suited to me. I also found the session to be about so much more than a career or future role; more like what you as a person - given all of your abilities, experience and desires -can achieve out of life."
OR WORKING ALONEThis applies equally to sole traders and self-employed people, whose solitary style of working often means that you may be caught in a cycle of replication of the same business ideas and patterns. Using a session to work out new ways of finding clients, expanding services or breaking through barriers caused by assumptions might be all the investment you need to make this year.
Amanda H, Journalist: "I found my sessions with Ruth invaluable in helping me to focus on where I was going and how I might get there. Rather than telling me what to do, she allowed me to work it out for myself: to stumble through the thickets of 'should do' and 'would do' to find a clearer path to the future. I thoroughly recommend Ruth to anyone thinking of re-evaluating their career."
